In 1930s England, a writer named Charles Condomine immerses himself in the search for inspiration for his new novel. To achieve this, he decides to invite a medium, Madame Arcati, to conduct a séance in his home. What begins as a curious experiment takes a strange turn of events when, in the middle of the séance, the spirit of his deceased wife, Elvira, unexpectedly makes her presence known.

Elvira, with her playful and somewhat jealous nature, starts to interfere in Charles's new life, as he has remarried to Ruth, a sensible and pragmatic woman. Ruth has no idea of Elvira's arrival, leading to a series of misunderstandings and absurdly comical situations. As Charles struggles to maintain balance in his marriage, Elvira's antics become increasingly persistent and complicated.

As the plot unfolds, the tension among the three characters intensifies, pushing Charles to a breaking point. The blend of comedy, love, and the supernatural reigns in this story, as the two worlds collide and jealousy ignites. In the end, Charles must decide whether to embrace the supernatural chaos or leave the past behind to build a future with Ruth, resulting in surprising revelations and an unexpected conclusion. The film combines wit and romance with a touch of the paranormal, creating an unforgettable cinematic experience.
