In the sunny Napa Valley of 1976, American winemaking is just starting to make a name for itself, but it still remains in the shadow of famous French vineyards. In this context, a small vineyard run by Jim Barrett, a passionate yet somewhat stubborn winemaker, struggles to take off. Meanwhile, his son Bo, who wishes to explore his own ambitions and step out of his father's shadow, finds himself torn between a love for wine and the desire to seek his identity in a world that seems dominated by French tradition.
The story takes a turn when an influential wine critic, Steven Spurrier, arrives in Napa with the idea of organizing a blind tasting between French and Californian wines. Jim and Bo see this as an opportunity to prove that their wine can compete on the global stage. Their fortunes change when they enlist the help of an enigmatic young woman named Sam, who challenges Bo to find his own voice, both in love and in wine.
As the preparations for the tasting heat up, friendships bloom, romances form, and competition becomes fierce. With a touch of humor and moments of tension, the film explores the passion for wine and the struggle for legitimacy in a world that often marginalized the creations of new artists. In the end, an unexpected perspective causes the wine world to turn its gaze towards California, challenging established traditions.
