In this film adaptation of a classic 70s series, we meet Jon Baker, a former motorcyclist who joins the California police in search of a new purpose in life. Although his passion for speed and life on two wheels make him a good candidate, Jon has to deal with his lack of experience as a law enforcement officer. His partner is Frank "Ponch" Poncherello, an undercover FBI agent infiltrated in a group of criminals who are stealing luxury vehicles on the highway. However, Ponch has his own personal issues to try to resolve while adapting to his new mission.
Together, they form an seemingly improbable duo. As Jon tries to prove his worth and overcome his insecurities, Ponch becomes an unexpected mentor and an unconventional friend. Through a series of explosive chases and comedic situations, the duo is forced to face not only the criminals but also their own personal demons.
