In a small French village in the 19th century, Eugénie, a beautifully simple young woman with a pure heart, lives trapped in the clutches of her austere and miserly father, a man obsessed with accumulating wealth. Eugénie's life unfolds in the monotony of the family home, under the constant surveillance and control of her parent, who despises any distraction that diverts him from his obsession with money. However, everything changes when a handsome and charming cousin, Charles, arrives in the village with the intention of seeking a better future.

Amid furtive glances and chance meetings, a romance filled with tenderness and hope blossoms, a haven of happiness in the oppressive atmosphere of Eugénie's home. But, as expected, the young woman's father will stand in their way, viewing Charles as a threat to his fortune. With each step Eugénie and Charles take toward their love, familial tensions rise, unleashing a series of tragic events that will change their lives forever.

The story explores themes such as familial oppression, the desire for freedom, and sacrifice for love. As the shadows of greed and control loom over them, Eugénie faces a painful choice between loyalty to her family and the longing to follow her own destiny. The film, through its rich narrative and complex characters, offers a reflection on the ties between love and ambition in a world where money is everything.
