In a dystopian future, a group of people lives isolated in a utopian society that seems perfect but is actually a facade. The residents, who believe they are the last survivors of a global cataclysm, lead a routine and controlled life with the hope of being chosen to "go to The Island," a dreamed-of place that represents a second chance at life. However, what they do not know is that they are clones, created to supply their wealthy "patrons" with organs and tissues when needed.
When Lincoln Six Echo, one of the protagonists, begins to have doubts about his existence and the world he lives in, he is drawn to a forbidden relationship and starts to question the truths he has been taught. Everything changes when he discovers the true nature of his existence. Along with his friend Jordan Two Delta, he decides to escape their oppressive environment and confront the reality of the outside world, which is very different from what they had been shown.
In their frantic flight, these inexperienced fugitives will not only seek their freedom but will also have to deal with an organization determined to capture them and a world that turns out to be a hostile and complicated terrain. As they flee, the couple unravels the mysteries of their own existence and struggles to find their place in a world where the meaning of life and freedom is constantly redefined.
