In the midst of World War II, a group of African American soldiers from the 92nd Infantry Division finds themselves trapped in rural Italy, far from home and facing not only the enemy but also the racism that lurks even among their own ranks. During a mission, one of them, the brave and determined Staff Sergeant Stamps, becomes the natural leader of the group when his comrades are forced to make difficult decisions that will test their courage and loyalty.
As they try to return to their base, the soldiers come across a small Italian village that has been devastated by the war. There, they meet a young mother and her child who have lost everything, and amid the sadness and horror, a human connection develops between the soldiers and the locals.
