In the 1930s, a Jewish German family is forced to leave behind their comfortable life in Europe and seek refuge in East Africa due to the rise of the Nazi regime. Walter Redlich, a lawyer, makes the difficult decision to move to a remote farm in Kenya with his wife Jettel and their young daughter, Regina. As Walter adapts to his new agricultural reality, Jettel struggles with nostalgia for her former life, facing loneliness and the cultural shock of her new home.
As days pass, the family begins to connect with the rich and vibrant African culture. Walter becomes involved in the local community, forging bonds with the natives around them, while Jettel embarks on a personal journey of rediscovery and adaptation. However, the roar of war in Europe soon reaches their ears, putting their already strained family relationship to the test.
Regina, growing up between two worlds, becomes a bridge between her German heritage and the African life that surrounds her. The film beautifully and profoundly explores themes such as identity, survival, and the sacrifices faced by those seeking refuge in times of crisis. As echoes of the past threaten to shatter the peace they have found, the family will be forced to confront their fears, their decisions, and their future in a place that, in many ways, has become their new home.
