In a well-off family in California, the parents of a young woman with intellectual disabilities, Carla, wish to protect her from the difficulties of the outside world and excessively overprotect her. However, Carla is determined to live her own life and prove that she is capable of achieving the independence she longs for. After graduating from high school, she moves into a dormitory for students with disabilities and begins to explore the world on her own.

During her new life, Carla meets other young people with their own stories, but the most significant spark in her journey arises when she falls in love with her classmate, Daniel, who also faces emotional and social challenges. As their relationship blossoms, Carla must learn to deal with her family's doubts and her own insecurities. Along the way, she faces disapproval from her mother, who fears that her daughter is not ready for the real world.

Throughout the film, Carla demonstrates her tenacity and bravery as she confronts prejudices and difficult moments. The story addresses themes of love, acceptance, and the search for personal identity. Amidst laughter and tears, Carla's journey leads her to discover that life can be complicated, but also incredibly beautiful. Her struggle for acceptance and independence serves as a powerful reminder that dreams are attainable, no matter the obstacles in the way.
