In 1930s London, an ordinary man named John Cummings finds himself trapped in the daily routine of a monotonous life, burdened by his family's heavy debts. As the financial pressure becomes unbearable and desperation takes hold of him, John stumbles upon an opportunity that could change his fortune: a master heist. The situation complicates when, in his eagerness to escape his troubles, he becomes embroiled in a series of questionable moral decisions that push him to the brink.

To tackle his problems, he decides to murder a wealthy moneylender who turns out to be the only way out of his predicament. However, the act he hoped would free him from his burdens transforms into his worst nightmare. As the consequences of his choice begin to unravel around him, John faces a psychological game, where guilt and fear consume him. With a rising atmosphere of tension, the film explores the internal struggle of a man who, having crossed the line between right and wrong, questions whether the price he has paid for his freedom is truly what he desired.

The story culminates in an unexpected ending, leaving the viewer reflecting on how far one would go to protect what little they have left and the true cost of a desperate act. Emma, his wife, also plays a crucial role in the plot, bringing an air of personal tragedy that intertwines with John's fate.
