In a not-so-distant future, Earth has been virtually stripped of its vegetation and ecosystems. The few remaining forests have been brought into space on research vessels, where they are cared for as a final refuge for terrestrial flora. Bruce Dern portrays a botanist named Freeman Lowell, who is part of a mission tasked with preserving these last remaining species. However, when the order comes to dispose of the invaluable trees in a desperate act to address Earth's economy, Lowell finds himself caught between a rock and a hard place.
Desperate to save the only vestige of life that remains, he decides to take matters into his own hands. With the help of his robotic companions, the lovable drones named Huey, Dewey, and Louie, he devises a daring plan to disobey orders and protect the vegetation at all costs. As the plot unfolds, the solitude of space becomes another character, intensifying the tension between life and death, nature and humanity.
With moments of profound philosophy and stunning visual backdrops, this love story for nature raises questions about sacrifice and environmental responsibility. Through an emotional and solitary journey, Freeman not only fights to protect what is left of Earth but also confronts his own morality and the connection between humanity and its environment. Itβs a reflection that resonates as much today as it did in the seventies.
