In a quiet Japanese village, the life of a teenager drastically changes when a new student, Shoya Ishida, crosses his path. From day one, Shoya feels intimidated by the arrival of Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf girl who faces a world full of prejudice and mockery. What begins as a pattern of bullying by Shoya evolves into a cycle of pain and guilt that will haunt him throughout his life.
As the years go by, Shoya's guilt over his childish behavior consumes him, leading him into a spiral of isolation and unrest. Acknowledging his past mistakes, he decides to seek out Shoko in hopes of redeeming himself. Upon reuniting with her, he discovers that her life has been marked by pain, but also by resilience. Shoya embarks on an emotional journey to understand himself and, in turn, to understand Shoko, who is facing her own healing process.
The film touches on themes such as friendship, bullying, loneliness, and the search for redemption, exploring how our actions can have lifelong repercussions. With beautiful animation and a sensitive narrative, the story navigates moments of humor and sadness, inviting the viewer to reflect on empathy and human connection in a world that often seems disconnected. The relationship between Shoya and Shoko shines as a beacon of hope amid adversity.
