In a small and peaceful American town, a group of childhood friends reunites after several years of separation. These young people, who shared laughter and secrets in their schoolyard, find themselves caught in the whirlwind of a world transforming after World War I. The story follows Jack, an idealist who returns home determined to improve his community, and his lifelong friend, Mary, who has struggled to get ahead in a world that has shut many doors in her face.

As Jack fosters a series of social initiatives to help the less fortunate, Mary faces her own battle against the prejudices and traditional expectations that bind her. The challenges they face are intensified by the economic tensions of the time, forcing the community to confront its own demons. The arrival of a new character, an enigmatic outsider, tests the loyalty of the group and exposes old grudges and secrets.

As the friends navigate the complicated web of their relationships, they are compelled to reflect on their pasts and rethink the future. The film captures the essence of an era of change, showing how friendship and love can flourish even in the thorny ground of social struggle, as each of them tries to find their place in a world that is no longer the same. With moments of tenderness, irony, and disillusionment, it leaves the viewer wondering: can old roots survive new realities?
