In World War II Italy, a mother and her daughter find themselves trapped in the chaos of war, seeking shelter in a crumbling world around them. Cesira, a strong and determined woman, tries to protect her daughter, the young Rosetta, as they flee from the horrors threatening their home. Hoping to find a safe place, they embark on a journey to the countryside and settle in a small village.

As tensions rise and conflict escalates, life in the village changes drastically. Cesira faces the struggle of maintaining her dignity while trying to preserve her daughter’s innocence amid the brutality of war. The story takes a heartbreaking turn when both women are threatened by the violence of the invading soldiers.

The mother-daughter relationship is put to the test, and Cesira is forced to make painful decisions in her efforts to protect Rosetta. Amid suffering and loss, moments of hope and solidarity emerge, showcasing the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. This tale of love, sacrifice, and resilience in dark times invites reflection on the cost of war and the power of maternal love. With stunning cinematography and memorable performances, this poignant narrative highlights a mother's struggle for survival and the quest for a better future in a devastated world.
