In a small Italian village after World War II, life has become a constant struggle for survival. Amidst the hardship and discouragement, a group of prisoners of war returns home after being liberated. However, the reunion with their families is not as straightforward as they had hoped. Between the pain and the scars of war, their loved ones have changed, and the community now lives marked by distrust and resentment.

The protagonist, a young man who was a prisoner, discovers that his girlfriend has forged a new life with another man. As he grapples with feelings of loss and betrayal, he also faces the resentment of those who did not understand the decisions he had to make while on the battlefield. Caught between the desire for reconciliation and the weight of his traumatic memories, he begins to search for ways to rebuild his life.

As the village tries to heal its collective wounds, the protagonist and the other ex-prisoners must confront their inner demons and find a path towards redemption. Through encounters and misunderstandings, the story reveals how love, loyalty, and forgiveness are essential to breaking the chains that bind them to the past. With poignant direction and heartfelt performances, this film becomes a profound reflection on the human capacity to survive and rediscover hope in the midst of adversity.
