In the context of World War II, a young woman named Verónika lives in Moscow with her family and her fiancé, Borís, an idealist who enlists to fight at the front. As the war progresses, Verónika's life is shaken by Borís's absence and the devastation that war brings to her city. The plot unfolds as bombings and tragedy become part of her daily life, forcing her to confront the horrors of the conflict.

When Borís is sent to war, Verónika tries to keep her hope alive, but the news she receives becomes increasingly grim. She feels trapped between her eternal love and the cruel reality of loss. Through a series of tragic events, Verónika is compelled to adapt and find new paths in a world torn apart by war.

Over time, Verónika’s life takes an unexpected turn when she starts a relationship with a soldier named Stepan, who has also been marked by the war. This new bond presents her with an emotional dilemma: should she move on with her life or cling to Borís's memory? The story explores pain, sacrifice, and human resilience in times of crisis, as Verónika seeks her identity and the meaning of love in a landscape devastated by war. The film captivates the viewer, inviting reflection on peace and the eternal longing for a better future.
