On a remote island in New England in the early 20th century, two lighthouse keepers, Thomas and Ephraim, are sent to tend to an old lighthouse. The atmosphere is tense from the start; the weather is harsh and solitude is overwhelming. As the storm batters the place, the relationship between the two men becomes increasingly strained. Ephraim, a young man with a dark past, is both fascinated and intimidated by the authoritarian figure of Thomas, who is convinced that only he should have access to the light of the lighthouse.
As the days go by, madness begins to take hold of them. Ephraim has disturbing visions and a growing obsession with the radiant light that seems to hold indescribable secrets. Tensions reach a breaking point between the men, who get caught in a macabre dance of authority and rebellion, eager to escape their mental and physical confinement.
The interactions become a power play, where masculinity, loneliness, and madness intertwine in a haunting narrative. The film plunges into a terrifying exploration of the human psyche, showcasing the struggle for survival in an increasingly surreal reality. With a stunning visual approach in black and white, the projection captivates the viewer in an atmosphere filled with tension and mystery, where the linearity of time and logic disintegrate, leaving both characters trapped in their own personal storm.
