In the 19th century, Ada McGrath, a mute woman and single mother, is sent from Scotland to New Zealand for an arranged marriage with a settler named Alisdair Stewart. Bringing with her her beloved piano, a symbol of her passion and connection to life, Ada discovers that her new husband has no interest in the instrument. As the story unfolds, Ada finds herself torn between her desire for music and her struggle for freedom in a world that has silenced her voice.

In an unexpected twist, Ada encounters a neighbor, the enigmatic Baines, who becomes fascinated by her musical talent. In an attempt to recover her piano, Ada establishes a curious relationship with Baines, which includes an exchange of "titles" for the instrument. This connection intensifies, leading her to explore sensuality and desire in ways she never imagined. However, the intense emotions and decisions made by the characters create a love triangle filled with tension and sacrifice.

The film takes place in a visually captivating setting, where the wild nature of New Zealand acts as a mirror to Ada's internal struggles. As the story progresses, Ada's choices lead her to confront her place in this world, revealing that the true meaning of freedom goes beyond the sound of the piano and delves into the depths of the human soul.
