In a working-class neighborhood of London, an unemployed engineer, Mark Thackeray, becomes a teacher to a class of troubled students at a secondary school. At first, he faces fierce resistance and disinterest from his pupils, who come from a difficult background and see education as a waste of time. However, Mark does not give up; instead of following a traditional approach, he decides to connect with them through his life experiences. With a more human approach, he manages to establish bonds and instill not only academic knowledge but also lessons about life and respect.

Over time, the class begins to transform. The boys, who were previously indifferent, start to open up and see Mark as a figure of authority but also as emotional support. Through a series of moving and challenging events, they confront their own prejudices and fears while helping Mark deal with his own personal struggles. In this process, unexpected relationships develop, and the students discover a new sense of purpose.

The story is intertwined with the music of the time and reflects the social tensions of the 1960s while showcasing the impact an educator can have on the lives of his students. As barriers are broken down, Mark becomes an inspiration, teaching that love and respect are fundamental to true learning.
