In a cold, gray Berlin, a man named Bruno lives a life of disillusionment and hopelessness. After leaving a psychiatric facility, he tries to reintegrate into society, but life in the city seems to be a labyrinth of obstacles. Bruno, portrayed with a mix of fragility and determination, faces the harsh realities of life in 1970s Germany: jobs are scarce, and human connection is almost nonexistent.
Alongside him is his nightclub friend, a woman seeking to escape her own demons, and the enigmatic yet tender elderly man Scheitz. Together, they decide to embark on a journey to the United States in the hope of finding a better life. Upon arriving in a small town in Wisconsin, Bruno discovers that life in America is not as idyllic as he had imagined. The culture of consumerism and superficiality begins to blur his dreams.
As the story unfolds, the characters struggle to find their place in a world that seems to have no room for them. The film employs an almost documentary style, capturing the essence of loneliness and the absurdity in the quest for happiness. With a melancholic and often surreal tone, the narration becomes a profound reflection on the sense of belonging and the search for purpose in life. At its core, it is a story about the relentless struggle of humanity to live and find its place in an indifferent world.
