Claudia Sheinbaum: Leadership and Challenges in Post-AMLO Mexico

Claudia Sheinbaum: Leadership and Challenges in Post-AMLO Mexico

Claudia Sheinbaum, a prominent 61-year-old scientist and left-wing politician, has emerged as the key figure to lead Mexico in a new era. Following the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), Sheinbaum faces the challenge of addressing one of the largest crises of violence the country has experienced, with almost 190,000 violent deaths during the term of her predecessor. This situation has not only deeply impacted public safety, but has also slowed the country's economic growth.

Sheinbaum's victory in the Mexican elections was expected, but the magnitude of her victory was surprising. With more than 60% of the vote, Sheinbaum will become Mexico's first president on October 1. Her party, Morena (National Regeneration Movement), has secured a qualified majority in the Chamber of Deputies and probably the Senate, allowing it to move forward with constitutional reforms that had stalled in previous years.

These are the main economic challenges that await the new Government headed by Sheinbaum, the first woman president in the

Economic and Security Challenges

Violence and Insecurity

Although violence in Mexico is not uniform and is concentrated in specific areas, its impact on investment and economic growth is significant. Organized crime has infiltrated key industries such as agriculture and mining, exacerbating insecurity. AMLO's "Hugs, not bullets" policy has failed to significantly reduce homicides, and the country continues to record more than 100,000 missing people.

Sheinbaum has promised to attack impunity and focus on the underlying causes of violence. Her strategy includes expanding youth programs, strengthening the National Guard, improving police intelligence and fostering cooperation between institutions in charge of security.

Michael Shifter, an expert at the Inter-American Dialogue think tank, maintains that "the ominous growth of organized crime and flourishing cartels is the most daunting problem that Sheinbaum will need to confront." The president-elect promises to eradicate impunity and, like AMLO, focus on the causes of violence by expanding programs for youth, strengthening the National Guard, more police intelligence and cooperation between institutions in charge of security.

Economy: Challenges and Opportunities

Sheinbaum inherits a fiscal deficit of almost 6%, the highest in 25 years, and an average economic growth of only 0.8% in the last six years. To finance direct aid to 25 million Mexicans and carry out other reforms, she needs to increase state revenues. The commitment to "nearshoring", which involves the relocation of the production of foreign companies to northern Mexico, is a key strategy, but its success will depend on improvements in security, infrastructure and water and energy supply.

Water is a crucial issue, with per capita availability that has decreased 68% since 1960. Sheinbaum, with a doctorate in environmental engineering, has promised to increase investment in clean energy, contrasting with AMLO's commitment to fossil energy and financial support for the indebted Pemex.

Pamela Starr, a Mexico expert at the University of Southern California, sums up the situation: "You need to spend money on many things, and there is no money. The infrastructure is obsolete. Electricity is a problem. Pemex is a problem."

Carlos RamĂrez, from the risk consultancy Integralia, warns that "nearshoring is not Mexico's great lifeline" and that its eventual success depends on improving security and infrastructure, water and energy supply.

Alfredo Coutiño, director of Moody's Analytics, points out that the next government will inherit a country with "a financial hole that will limit the room for maneuver." Sheinbaum has stated that he will continue with the current president's projects and add some of his own, but the challenge will be to find the necessary financial resources to do so without triggering an economic crisis due to an uncontrolled increase in debt.

Relationship with the United States: A Diplomatic Challenge

The period of power transition in Mexico coincides with the electoral campaign in the United States, the country's main trading partner. The bilateral relationship is influenced by security, migration and trade issues. The reelection of Joe Biden or the return of Donald Trump in November will be a critical variable that could significantly alter the scenario.

The relationship between Mexico and the United States is also marked by migration and fentanyl trafficking. Sheinbaum has indicated that he will maintain a loving relationship ity and mutual respect with the United States, always defending Mexicans abroad.

Carlos A. PĂ©rez Ricart, professor at CIDE, a Mexican public research center, explains that the election in the United States is “the real variable that will modify scenarios.” If Joe Biden loses and Trump wins, who promises to set up migrant detention camps and deport them en masse, "the biggest challenge that Mexico will face is uncertainty." The trade policy of the northern neighbor is one of the main axes of the US electoral campaign, in which the Democrat, the current president Joe Biden, and the Republican and former president Donald Trump will face each other again. Managing the complex relationship with the United States poses another challenge for Sheinbaum, amid uncertainty about who will win the November presidential election and the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (USMCA) in 2026, for which Washington may demand compensation. .

Energy and Infrastructure

To capitalize on nearshoring and attract investment, Mexico needs substantial improvements in its energy supply, especially renewable energy, and in the modernization of basic transportation and water infrastructure. Sheinbaum has promised to create 100 new industrial parks across the country to take advantage of business relocation near the United States.

Pemex, the state oil company, faces a difficult financial situation. Sheinbaum plans to renegotiate its debt and refocus the company on renewable energy, although government fiscal support for Pemex will continue to be necessary for several years.

Carlos Torres, president of the BBVA financial group, the first bank in Mexico, assured that "if Mexico is capable of solving this bottleneck and also the existing ones in transportation infrastructure or water supply and adopts the correct measures in energy matters," Foreign direct investment will increase “very significantly” in the country.

Infrastructure Mega Projects

The outgoing government has promoted several infrastructure megaprojects that Sheinbaum will continue. Among them, the Mayan Train stands out, which will connect five states in the Mexican southeast, the Tulum International Airport and the Interoceanic Railway. These projects seek to promote regional development and tourism, as well as improve connectivity and trade. The Felipe Ángeles International Airport and the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train are other key projects that are expected to boost the country's economy and infrastructure.

The outgoing government bet heavily on infrastructure megaprojects. The controversial Mayan Train stands out, which will connect five states in southeastern Mexico to promote their socioeconomic development, despite criticism for its environmental impact. To support tourism, the Tulum International Airport was built in Quintana Roo. In addition, the Interoceanic Railway was strengthened to connect the ports of Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz to boost international trade and passenger transportation. Another emblematic project is the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), built to alleviate air traffic in the center of the country after the cancellation of the Texcoco Airport. The AIFA, increasingly crowded, will have an extension of the Suburban Train to connect with the center of Mexico City. Additionally, the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train, now called 'El Insurgente', began under Enrique Peña Nieto and was taken up by AMLO, and is partially functional.

Claudia Sheinbaum faces a path full of challenges when assuming the presidency of Mexico. Violence, the fiscal deficit and the need to improve infrastructure are some of its most urgent challenges. However, with a strong popular mandate and a focus on democracy and plurality, Sheinbaum has the opportunity to lead a significant transformation in the country.

Her success will depend on her ability to implement key reforms, improve security and attract investments that drive sustainable economic growth. With a clear vision and a commitment to democratic values, Sheinbaum is well positioned to mark a new era in Mexican history.

Why did Claudia Sheinbaum won?

Why did Claudia Sheinbaum won?

Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as the next president of Mexico, marking the beginning of a new era in the country. With 96.21% of the votes counted, Sheinbaum, candidate of the ruling Morena party, obtained a resounding 59.35% of the votes. This victory places her more than 30 points away from her main competitor, Xóchitl Gålvez, who represented the opposition alliance between the PRI, the PAN and the PRD, and which obtained an average of 27.9% of the votes. In third place, with 10.41% of the votes, was Jorge Álvarez Måynez, from Citizen Movement.

Sheinbaum, who will be the first woman in the history of Mexico to occupy the National Palace, will take office on October 1, succeeding the current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). This triumph for Sheinbaum is not only significant because of her wide margin of victory, but also because of what she represents in terms of political continuity.

To understand the reasons behind this historic victory, it is essential to examine the key factors that led Claudia Sheinbaum to win the election.

Why did Claudia Sheinbaum win the elections?

Popularity of AMLO and the state machinery

Claudia Sheinbaum was greatly benefited by the high popularity of Andrés Manuel López Obrado r (AMLO), with whom she shares political alliances. The president's endorsement, which has a 60% approval level, exerted a positive influence on Sheinbaum's candidacy, further consolidating her support.

Furthermore, Sheinbaum managed to establish two fundamental perceptions in the collective imagination, especially among the popular sectors. First of all, she built a total connection with LĂłpez Obrador , avoiding any hint of disagreement between them. This association became a guarantee of continuity in policies and the protection of AMLO for those who revere the acting president.

Secondly, she projected an image of seriousness, discipline and scientific competence that generated confidence in many, including the international press. While LĂłpez Obrador's lack of knowledge did not worry her followers ("she may know little, but she is like us"), Sheinbaum inspired confidence on the contrary ("She has knowledge, she is a professional") .

In addition to this, she benefited from the extensive national network of the ruling party , Morena, and she had the support of the State machinery .

According to Gustavo Urbina, an academic at the College of Mexico, "Since the hegemony of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Morena has probably become the most successful party model at the national level."

However, it is important to consider how this scheme will change with the figure of Claudia as AMLO's successor, according to Urbina.

On the other hand, Shifter highlighted AMLO's weight in the nomination of Sheinbaum as a candidate, who, although she won an internal party consultation, was always seen as the president's favorite.

"AMLO's supporters trust her judgment and have come together to support her successor," Shifter stressed.

Finally, it is essential to recognize that there was a significant political operation during the elections in favor of Sheinbaum's option. This political operation, which was not only limited to emotional support for LĂłpez Obrador, but was also supported by all the government's social programs, was a determining factor in Sheinbaum's success.

Âż Why did Claudia Sheinbaum win? width=

An academic profile

Claudia Sheinbaum stands out for her academic profile, very different from that of the president, which has generated a more neutral perception compared to him. While López Obrador can inspire love or animosity, Sheinbaum is seen as a more technical and conversational figure. According to María Eugenia Valdés, an expert in political processes, this difference in styles is key to understanding why Sheinbaum has even managed to surpass her mentor in votes. Valdés points out that López Obrador has generated fear in some political and economic sectors, while Sheinbaum presents a more conciliatory image Dora.

Violeta VĂĄzquez-Rojas highlights Sheinbaum's ability to dialogue with those sectors that felt wronged by the president. This strategy allowed disenchanted people to find in Sheinbaum a figure they could trust and vote for. Specifically, the academic and middle-class vote was attracted to Sheinbaum's less confrontational style, offering a kind of reconciliation with the Fourth Transformation.

Analysts agree that Sheinbaum's conduct has been impeccable. Being a leftist woman, her career was never associated with the PRI or the PAN , which makes her coherent with her principles and linked to social causes. Her experience as a student leader, university professor and researcher, along with her participation in international organizations, give her a modern left-wing image that has benefited her campaign.

On the other hand, the political scientist mentions another factor in favor of Sheinbaum: the support of the party in territorial work. By not having to worry so much about this work, the candidate was able to focus on her message and her proposals, which gave her an additional advantage during the campaign.

Why did Claudia Sheinbaum win?

Opposition Weakness

The alliance between the PRI, the PAN and the PRD failed to gain the trust of voters. This coalition never achieved full cohesion. However, beyond this, it turned out to be an impossible task to eliminate or at least reduce the deep-rooted discredit of the parties that have governed Mexico since 2000: the National Action Party (PAN) and the former Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). This constant reminder of incompetence and corruption, frequently emphasized by Sheinbaum, had a significant impact on GĂĄlvez's campaign, representing an innate and insurmountable obstacle.

The focus of the campaign was on how a victory for the ruling party would weaken the institutions, but the population does not feel loyalty to institutions like the SCJN because in previous governments they did not perceive beneficial results.

Finally, GĂĄlvez made a series of mistakes in a campaign where he could not afford any. Two of these errors are especially notable. First, she failed to respond quickly and effectively to the attacks directed by LĂłpez Obrador against her integrity and honesty, just after announcing her candidacy. She was accused of illicit enrichment during her previous charges, improperly approving construction permits, and awarding contracts with favoritism. Although GĂĄlvez denied these accusations, she was clearly not prepared to face this onslaught.

Jorge Zepeda Patterson, writer and analyst, highlights a crucial error of the opposition during this period. According to him, the opposition's mortal sin lies in its lack of attention to the "real, current and genuine discontent" of many Mexicans. Zepeda Patterson points out that the opposition's strategy focused on discrediting the current government, showing LĂłpez Obrador's demagoguery or inefficiency on issues such as violence or access to health.

However, according to Zepeda Patterson, this tactic has not worked because people perceive that, at least, the current government is trying to address these problems, while the traditional parties do not even try. This perception leads the population to maintain their support for the current government, despite its deficiencies, due to the lack of credible alternatives on the part of the opposition.

Âż Why did Claudia Sheinbaum win? width=

Social programs

Thesocial programs sponsored by AMLO have been a fundamental piece in the continuous support for the current government. Now, the population enjoys programs that offer around $2,000 pesos, along with average salaries of between $14,000 and $16,000 pesos, marking a notable change from the low minimum wages of the past.

This improvement in the quality of shared life has strengthened loyalty towards the government, while the idea of defending abstract institutions like the SCJN has lost relevance compared to the tangible benefits provided by the government.

Voters act rationally, endorsing what they consider essential to their daily well-being. This was reflected in a pre-election survey, where 64% of respondents receiving official assistance expressed their intention to vote for Sheinbaum.

On the other hand, those not receiving these benefits showed lower support, with GĂĄlvez outperforming Sheinbaum by 11 points. With more than 30 million households benefiting from some form of government aid, this factor could have been decisive in Sheinbaum's victory. Social programs have been a crucial aspect that has shaped the political and electoral landscape.

Why did Claudia Sheinbaum win?

What other reasons do you think were fundamental for Claudia Sheinbaum to come to power? What are the challenges she has facing her six-year term?

The best excuses to stay home without your friends bothering you

The best excuses to stay home without your friends bothering you

Saying no to a plan can be a challenge, especially when we prefer to stay home and enjoy our own space. Today we want to explore the best excuses we can use when we don't want to meet our friends. Before starting we want to clarify that having time for yourself is important but so is being able to share time with our friends, so we must do everything possible to have a balance between these two parts of our personal life.

The importance of spending time with yourself

In the whirlwind of modern life, where obligations and the accelerated pace consume us, the search for tranquility and introspection becomes an essential oasis for our well-being. It is not just about recharging the batteries and renewing focus, but about connecting with our inner being and attending to our deepest needs.

Learning to enjoy solitude is not an act of isolation or disinterest in others, but rather an self-knowledge exercise that allows us to explore our own essence. In that space of stillness, we can listen to our inner voice, discover new perspectives, and cultivate a deeper relationship with ourselves.

The best excuses to stay home without bothering your friends

Loneliness is not an enemy, but an ally that accompanies us on the path of personal growth. Embracing it as a refuge, we can discover a source of inner peace, creativity and wisdom. It is in that space of silence where we can heal wounds, reconnect with our values and rediscover the strength that resides within us.

Learning to enjoy solitude is not a privilege for a few, but a skill that we can all cultivate. In a world that invites us to constant connection and outside noise, solitude makes us offers a sacred spaceto connect with our essence and build a fuller and more meaningful life.

The importance of socializing

Although solitude can be a space for valuable growth, connection with others is a fundamental pillar of our existence. Social relationships weave a network of emotional support that gives us refuge in difficult times and amplifies our joy in happy moments.

Sharing experiences with friends, laughing together until the tears come and creating memories that are treasured in the heart are just some of the wonders that socialization offers us. These interactions not only fill us with laughter and complicity, but also strengthen our ties with the people we appreciate.

Beyond pleasure and joy, healthy social connections are essential for our mental and emotional well-being. Feeling part of a group, knowing that we have people who listen to us, understand and support us, gives us a deep sense of belonging and security.

Cultivating healthy and enriching social relationships is an investment in our own well-being. By weaving these networks of connection, we strengthen our mental and emotional health, nourish our spirit, and enrich our lives with invaluable experiences and emotions.

Remember, loneliness and social connection are not two opposing forces, but two sides of the same coin. Both are necessary to achieve balance and live a full and meaningful life.

The importance of having a balance between the personal and social spheres

In the dance of life, finding harmony between personal time and social time can be a real challenge. We often find ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of invitations, commitments and expectations, feeling the pressure to be present at all times. However, it is crucial to recognize that we are not tireless machines, and that prioritizing our well-being is not only a right, but a fundamental need.

The best excuses for to stay at home without your friends bothering you

Honoring our personal space does not mean isolating ourselves from the world or rejecting others. It's about establishing healthy limits that allow us to recharge our batteries, connect with our inner self and attend to our deepest needs. Only in this way can we approach our social relationships with fullness and authenticity.

Finding the perfect balance between "I" and "we" is a path of self-knowledge and experimentation. There is no magic formula that works for everyone, as each individual's needs and preferences are unique. . The important thing is to listen to ourselves, pay attention to the signals that our body and mind send us, and create a rhythm of life that allows us to enjoy both areas without feeling overwhelmed.

The best excuses for not seeing your friends and not having them hate you for it

Below is a list of the best excuses we can use when we prefer to stay home:

  1. "I'm sorry, but my bed and my pillow need me tonight! It's a must-see date to recharge your batteries!"
  2. "My future self will thank me: today is the night to stay home and enjoy some well-deserved rest!"
  3. "My aura needs a break! I'm in 'sensitive' mode and need time alone to recharge."
  4. "Time to be a responsible adult! It's my closet clean out day! Who said organization isn't fun?"
  5. "A little overwhelmed... I need some time for myself! Thanks for understanding!"
  6. "My body is asking for rest: today is a party-free day for me!"
  7. "The most important date: my bed and my pajamas! Who needs more!"
  8. "Oops! Last minute commitments! I'm stuck in a reading marathon tonight!"
  9. "Health priorities: a visit to the doctor/dentist is urgent!"
  10. "I am committed... to myself! I cannot fail myself!"
  11. "I'm not in the mood today... but I thank you very much for the invitation!"
  12. "I can't go out! My pillow needs a hug and I need a break!"
  13. "My pets are my priority: they need extra attention today!"
  14. "It's time to experiment! I'm going to test the regenerative power of a 4-hour nap!"
  15. "Sorry, but I have an important talk with my cat! Feline priorities!"
  16. "Surprise! I'm a confirmed introvert! Better to stay home!"
  17. "I'm going to be the chef for the night! It's time to cook something delicious!"
  18. "Family comes first! Today is stay home night with them!"
  19. "Sorry, I already had plans! I'm meeting another group tonight!"
  20. "My relationship with my couch and Netflix is serious! Thanks, but I'm staying home tonight!"

These excuses are clever and effective in communicating our need for time to ourselves in a respectful and clear way. Remember that it's okay to say "no" when you need to and prioritize your emotional well-being. Choose the excuse that best suits your situation and enjoy your personal time!

Loving without losing yourself: How to maintain your essence in a couple

Loving without losing yourself: How to maintain your essence in a couple

Relationships can be a source of immense joy and satisfaction. Finding someone to share our lives, dreams, and challenges with can be a transformative experience.

Love, that powerful force that unites us with another soul but at the same time can also lead us to a dead end: losing our identity.

Have you ever felt like you've become someone different in your relationship? Why do we stop being ourselves when we are in a relationship? We will explore the causes behind this transformation and offer strategies to keep our identity intact while enjoying a loving relationship.

The reasons we stop being ourselves in a relationship are complex and multifaceted. Below, we present some of the most common factors that contribute to this phenomenon:

Fear of Rejection

Fear of rejection is one of the main reasons why people change their behavior in a relationship. This fear can be so deep that it leads us to modify our personality and actions to ensure that our partner accepts and loves us. This need for acceptance can cause us to suppress our true opinions, desires, and behaviors, all in an effort to avoid rejection.

The fear of rejection is often rooted in past experiences. Perhaps in a previous relationship we were rejected for being authentic, or perhaps our life experiences have taught us that we must conform to be loved. This fear can lead us to be overly complacent, avoid conflict at all costs, and constantly adapt to our partner's expectations, sacrificing our authenticity in the process.

Some examples include:

  • Hide our true feelings or interests: For fear of being judged or rejected, we can choose to hide aspects of our personality that we believe would not be accepted by our partner.
  • Change our appearance or behavior: To adapt to what we think our partner wants, we can modify the way we dress, speak or behave in general.
  • Avoid conflict: For fear of hurting our partner's feelings or damaging the relationship, we can avoid expressing our opinions or real needs, repressing emotions and desires.

Low self-esteem

Low self-esteem is another fundamental reason why we can lose our identity in a relationship. If we don't value ourselves, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking we need to change to be loved. This lack of self-acceptance can lead us to become overly dependent on our partner for validation and to adapt our behavior to earn their approval.

In a relationship, this can lead us to:

  • Relying excessively on our partner's validation: We base our self-esteem on our partner's opinion and affection, losing sight of our own intrinsic value.
  • Accept disrespectful or hurtful behavior: For fear of losing our partner, we tolerate attitudes or actions that do not agree with our values or that make us feel bad.
  • Giving up our dreams or personal goals: To please our partner or avoid conflicts, we sacrifice our own aspirations and desires.

Need for Approval

From a young age, many of us seek approval from the people around us. In a relationship, this need can lead us to behave in ways that are not authentic. We want to be validated, accepted, and loved, and we often believe that the only way to achieve this is by adapting to our partner's expectations.

This constant search for approval can be exhausting and, over time, can lead to a disconnection from our true needs and desires. This need can manifest itself in various ways:

  • Constantly adapt to our partner's expectations: We modify our behavior, tastes or even opinions to adjust to what we believe our partner expects of us.
  • Seek acceptance from common friends or family: We prioritize the approval of the shared social circle over our own authenticity.

Lack of communication

Lack of effective communication in a relationship can be a crucial factor contributing to the loss of identity. Without open and honest communication, it is easy to fall into the trap of hiding parts of ourselves to avoid conflict or misunderstanding. Communication is essential to expressing our needs, desires, and boundaries, and without it, it is easy to feel disconnected and not understood.

Lack of communication can lead to misunderstandings and built-up resentments. If we don't feel comfortable expressing our true opinions and feelings, we can begin to hold back, adapting to what we think our partner wants to hear. Over time, this lack of authenticity can create an emotional distance between us and our partner, and also between us and our true identity.

The lack of effective communication can contribute to the loss of our identity:

  • Difficulty expressing our true feelings: We repress ourselves for fear of hurting our partner or starting a conflict.
  • Misinterpretations and misunderstandings: Lack of clarity in communication can lead to confusion and our partner not understanding our needs or desires.
  • Avoid difficult or conflictive topics: We postpone important conversations for fear of negative reactions or consequences.
Love without losing yourself: How to maintain your essence in a couple

The Myth of "We"

The “we” myth suggests that we must merge completely with our partner, losing our individuality in the process. Although closeness and togetherness are important aspects of a relationship, it is crucial to maintain a sense of "I" separate from the "we." Complete fusion with our partner can lead to a loss of identity and a feeling of being trapped.

It is natural to want to share experiences and create a life together with our partner, but this should not mean sacrificing our individuality. Maintaining personal interests and activities is essential to preserving our identity. In doing so, we not only maintain a sense of self, but also enrich the relationship by bringing unique experiences and perspectives.

The reality is very different:

  • A healthy relationship is based on the union of two unique beings, not on the cancellation of one by the other.
  • It is important to maintain a sense of “I” separate from “we” to preserve our autonomy and authenticity.
  • Total fusion can lead to emotional dependency, resentment, and loss of identity.

The Search for Acceptance and Love

The search for acceptance and love drives us to make personal sacrifices. We want our partner to love and accept us, and sometimes we believe that the only way to achieve this is by changing aspects of ourselves that we don't really want to change. This desire to be accepted can be so strong that it leads us to compromise our authenticity.

In our search for acceptance and love, it is easy to lose sight of who we really are. We can begin to make concessions that, although initially seem small, can accumulate over time and lead us to feel that we have lost our essence. It is essential to remember that a healthy relationship does not require us to sacrifice our identity, but rather allows us to be authentic while sharing our lives with another person.

We forget that true love does not ask for sacrifices, but rather embraces us as we are:

  • We give up our passions and interests: To dedicate more time to the relationship or please our partner, we put aside activities that fulfill us and define us as people.
  • We adopt opinions or beliefs that are not ours: To avoid conflicts or gain the approval of our partner, we modify our ideas and convictions.
  • We become emotional chameleons: We adapt our emotions and reactions to adjust to what we believe our partner expects of us.

The Influence of Social Expectations

Social and cultural expectations can put significant pressure on how we behave in a relationship. Traditional norms about how couples should behave can lead us to assume roles or behaviors that do not reflect our true nature. These expectations can contribute to the loss of our identity.

Social expectations can dictate how we should act, what roles we should take, and what behaviors are acceptable in a relationship. Meeting these expectations can make us feel like we have to fit a specific mold, sacrificing our true passions and interests in the process. It is important to question these norms and create a relationship that reflects our authentic personalities and values.

In the context of relationships, this can lead us to:

  • Follow traditional gender roles: We adopt behaviors and expectations that are associated with our gender, even if they do not fit our personality or desires.
  • Comparing ourselves to other couples: We idealize other people's relationships and feel pressured to achieve a level of success or happiness that does not necessarily fit our own reality.
  • Ignoring our own needs and values: To fit into social expectations, we sacrifice important aspects of our identity and well-being.

Complacency and Lack of Limits

Complacency and a lack of clear boundaries lead us to say “yes” when we want to say “no.” By not setting healthy boundaries, we find ourselves adopting behaviors and habits that are not authentic to us, diluting our true identity. Complacency may be a way to avoid conflict, but in the long term, it can result in resentment and loss of identity.

Setting boundaries is essential to maintaining our individuality in a relationship. Clear boundaries allow us to communicate our needs and wants effectively, and help us maintain a sense of control over our lives. Learning to set clear boundaries is crucial to protecting our individuality and cultivating a healthy relationship:

  • We become complacent: To avoid conflicts or hurting our partner, we accept plans, activities or decisions that we don't like or that go against our principles.
  • We lose the ability to say "no": We feel guilty or selfish when expressing our needs or desires, allowing our partner to make decisions for us.
  • Resentment and frustration: Lack of boundaries can generate long-term resentment and frustration, damaging the relationship and our own self-esteem.

How to Recover and Maintain Our Identity

  1. Self-exploration and Self-awareness

Spending time on self-exploration is crucial to maintaining our identity in a relationship. Reflecting on our passions, values and desires helps us reaffirm who we are and what we want. Practicing self-awareness allows us to identify when we are acting authentically and when we are over-accommodating to our partner.

Self-exploration may include activities such as journaling, meditating, or participating in therapy. These practices help us connect with our inner feelings and thoughts, and better understand our needs and desires. By doing so, we can make more informed and authentic decisions about how we want to behave in our relationship.

  2. Open Communication

Maintaining open and honest communication with our partner about our needs and limits is essential. Sharing our authentic thoughts and feelings strengthens the relationship and allows us to maintain our individuality. Effective communication is the foundation of a healthy relationship and allows us to express who we really are.

The open communication involves actively listening to our partner and being honest about our own needs. This may require bravery and vulnerability, but it is essential to building a relationship based on authenticity and mutual respect. By expressing our true opinions and feelings, we foster an environment of trust and understanding in the relationship.

  3. Personal Space

Making time for individual activities and friends outside of the relationship fosters a sense of independence and reinforces our identity. Maintaining hobbies and personal interests helps us preserve our essence and avoid the feeling of being trapped in the relationship.

Personal space does not mean emotional distancing, but rather a recognition that both partners need time and space to grow as individuals. By cultivating our personal interests, we not only enrich our own lives, but we also bring new experiences and perspectives to the relationship, thereby strengthening the bond with our partner.

  4. Mutual Acceptance

It is important to be in a relationship where both parties accept and celebrate each other as they are. This creates an environment where we don't feel the need to change to be loved. Mutual acceptance allows us to be authentic and maintain our identity while sharing our life with our partner.

Mutual acceptance involves recognizing and respecting the differences between us and our partner. Instead of trying to change each other, we celebrate their unique qualities and value what each person brings to the relationship. This attitude of acceptance and mutual respect is essential for a healthy and long-lasting relationship.

  5. Establishment of Limits

Learn to say "no" and set clear boundaries. Defining what is acceptable and what is not in the relationship will help you maintain your sense of self. Healthy boundaries allow us to protect our individuality and ensure that our needs and desires are respected.

Setting boundaries can be difficult at first, especially if we are used to pleasing others. However, it is an essential skill to maintain our authenticity in a relationship. Clear boundaries allow us to communicate our expectations and needs effectively, and help us maintain a healthy balance between our individual identity and our life as a couple.

Stopping being ourselves in a relationship is a common phenomenon, but not inevitable. By understanding the reasons behind this trend and taking proactive steps to maintain our authenticity, we can enjoy healthier, more satisfying relationships. At the end of the day, a true, lasting relationship does not require us to sacrifice our identity, but rather allows us to flourish together as unique and complete individuals. Staying true to ourselves while connecting deeply with another person is the ideal balance for a happy and meaningful relationship.

Addiction to toxic relationships: Guide to identify and overcome it

In this world in which almost all of us look for love, a stable partner or a company that makes us feel better and with which we can share our achievements, sometimes we stumble upon relationships that, far from be a fairy tale, they become torment. Have you wondered if you are in one of these relationships?

Today we want to talk to you about addiction to this type of toxic relationships, but for that we will first talk about what these relationships are,  understand their effects and, most importantly, give you the tools to free yourself and build relationships healthy and full of light.

Tired of feeling exhausted, insecure and lackluster in your relationship? It's time to open your eyes! Perhaps you are trapped in a cycle of toxic relationships, traps disguised as love that consume your energy and happiness. Don't settle for less than what you deserve!

But first of all we need to know...

What is a toxic relationship?

Imagine a connection with another person who, instead of nurturing and supporting you, causes emotional, psychological, and even physical harm. That is the harsh reality of a toxic relationship.

These types of relationships are characterized by:

  • Lack of respect: Manipulation, emotional blackmail, insults or even violence. A hostile environment where your dignity is violated.
  • Emotional instability: Pathological jealousy, constant arguments, emotional ups and downs that make you feel on a roller coaster of negative emotions.
  • Excessive control: Obsessive need to know where you are and with whom, checking your phone, etc. A suffocation of your individual freedom.
  • Emotional dependence: Feeling empty without your partner, with a paralyzing fear of being alone. A relationship that robs you of your independence and self-esteem.
  • Low self-esteem: Feeling inferior, guilty or not good enough for your partner. A relationship that undermines your personal value.

In short, they are relationships that make us constantly feel bad about ourselves and that negatively affect our emotional and mental well-being.

How to identify that you are in a toxic relationship?

It is crucial to recognize the signs of a toxic relationship in order to take control of your life. Some signs that can alert you are:

  • Trapped in the web of fear: An irrational terror of losing your loved one consumes you, turning them into the center of your universe. You become obsessed with his presence, sacrificing your own identity for the sake of keeping him close.
  • An endless dance of demands: The relationship becomes a battlefield where constant demands replace genuine affection. Each seeks to obtain from the other what he needs, regardless of the needs of the other.
  • The false illusion of completeness: You believe that your partner is the other half of your soul, the only one who can fill you. However, this dependency makes you vulnerable and plunges you into despair if he distances himself.
  • Maturity disguised as disinterest: Emotional maturity, that ability to love without unhealthy attachments, is interpreted as disinterest and indifference. True freedom and mutual respect are confused with coldness and apathy.
  • Submission and total surrender: You surrender to your partner without questioning anything, renouncing your own will in a vain attempt to keep them by your side. Submission and blind obedience become the currency of love.
  • Excessive passion without satisfaction: Sexuality, instead of being an act of connection and shared pleasure, becomes an obsessive and uncontrolled need. The quality of the encounter takes a backseat to the intensity of the passion.
  • Jealousy, possession and violence: The lack of equality and freedom in the relationship breeds unhealthy jealousy, possessiveness and a desire for absolute control over the other. This breeding ground can lead to mutual deterioration and, in extreme cases, physical or emotional violence.

If you identify with several of these signs, it is important that you take some time to reflect on your relationship and seek help if you need it.

Addiction to toxic relationships: Guide for identify it and overcome it

How do I know if I am addicted to a toxic relationship?

Addiction to a toxic relationship can be difficult to recognize, as it hides under the mask of love. But as in all addictions, there are mechanisms in our brain that guide us towards these types of relationships:

  • The brain's reward system: a complex machinery that regulates the sensation of pleasure. When we experience something pleasant, this system releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that makes us feel good.
  • Toxic relationships: a scenario where the reward system becomes a double-edged sword. At the beginning, the relationship can generate moments of intense pleasure, activating the release of dopamine.
  • The trap of addiction: Over time, the relationship becomes turbulent, with moments of pain and disappointment. However, the memory of past pleasurable experiences, even if they are few, keeps the hope alive that the relationship will be good again.
  • The cycle of addiction: a cyclical pattern of behavior is established:
    • Idealization phase: the person sees his or her partner as perfect and the relationship as ideal.

That is, when we receive external approval and validation, our reward circuits in the brain are activated, releasing dopamine and serotonin, chemicals linked to pleasure and happiness.

However, when the reward is inconsistent and unpredictable, as is the case in toxic relationships, our brains focus on chasing that emotional high.

After experiencing that emotional rise, comes the fall, and sometimes, emotional withdrawal syndrome. The circuits activated in the brain are practically the same, which explains why it is so difficult to break the cycle of a toxic relationship.

It is essential to differentiate between harmless flirting and a toxic relationship. At the beginning of a relationship, it is normal for there to be moments of intense emotion and periods of calm. These ups and downs are part of foreplay and the biology of falling in love. However, there are warning signs that indicate that the relationship is taking a toxic turn.

Some signs that may indicate that you are in this situation are:

  • You cling to the hope that your partner will change: Despite trials and pain, you believe that your partner can change and that the relationship can improve.
  • You feel guilty for thinking about ending the relationship: You believe that you are responsible for your partner's unhappiness and you feel guilty for thinking about leaving them.
  • You reconcile with your partner again and again: Despite the problems and broken promises, you fall back into the relationship again and again.
  • You feel a huge emptiness when you are not with your partner: You feel insecure, dependent and you don't know how to be alone.

If you identify with these signs, it is important that you recognize that you are in a relationship that is harmful to you and that you seek professional help to break the cycle of addiction.

What can I do to get away from toxic relationships?

Getting out of a toxic relationship can be a difficult process, but with the right support and determination, it is possible. Here are some steps you can follow:

  • Admit that you are in a toxic relationship: The first step is to recognize the reality of your situation. Accept that the relationship is hurting you and that you need to take steps to change it.
  • Strengthen your self-esteem: Remember that you deserve love and respect.
  • Seek support: Talk to friends, family, or a mental health professional. The support of people who love and understand you can be invaluable in this process.
  • Set clear limits: Define what you are willing to tolerate and what you are not in a relationship. Communicate these boundaries to your partner clearly and firmly.
  • End the relationship: If the situation does not improve after you have tried everything else, it is time to take control of your life and end the relationship.

Remember that you are not alone. There are many people who have gone through the same thing as you and have managed to get ahead. With effort and determination, you too can free yourself from a toxic relationship and build healthy and light-filled relationships.

Other tips we can give you to get away from a toxic relationship and overcome it are:

  • Take care of your physical and mental health: It is important that you take care of yourself both physically and mentally during this process. Get enough sleep, eat healthy, exercise, and find activities that make you feel good.
  • Avoid contact with your ex-partner: It may be difficult at first, but it is important to avoid contact with your ex-partner in order to move forward.
  • Join a support group: There are many support groups available for people who have been in toxic relationships. These groups can help you feel less alone and learn from other people's experiences.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for professional help: A mental health professional can help you understand the causes of your addiction to toxic relationships and develop strategies to overcome them.
