During the American Civil War, a young army lieutenant, John Dunbar, searches for the meaning of his life and volunteers to serve on the frontier. During his time at an isolated outpost, he begins to explore the vast landscape and encounters a tribe of Native Americans, the Sioux. At first, their meetings are tense and filled with misunderstandings, but as time passes, Dunbar forms an unexpected friendship with them. He becomes a cultural bridge between two conflicting worlds, learning their language and customs, and participating in their daily life.
