In the 1910s, young Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan embarks on a journey that will change his life and the way mathematics is perceived. Coming from a modest background in Madras, Ramanujan, portrayed by Dev Patel, has an extraordinary talent for number theory, but he faces skepticism from the Indian academic community. In hopes of gaining recognition, he decides to send a letter to the prestigious British mathematician G.H. Hardy, portrayed by Jeremy Irons, in which he presents his innovative ideas and theorems.

Impressed by Ramanujan's genius, Hardy invites him to Cambridge, where life becomes a challenge. As Ramanujan struggles with the cold British climate and the racism of the time, he faces the disbelief of his colleagues who do not understand his intuitive approach to mathematics. However, with Hardy's help, he begins to prove the validity of his theories, gradually earning the respect of his academic environment.

The story also explores the relationship between Hardy and Ramanujan, marked by mutual respect and cultural differences. As they fight against the adversities of their disparate worlds, the bond between them strengthens. However, Ramanujan's life is plagued by illness, raising a poignant dilemma about the cost of genius and the sacrifices made in the name of passion. The film is a fascinating exploration of the power of intellect and the recognition of talent within a context of prejudice and limitations.
