In this moving story, we meet Bessie, a single mother who has dedicated her life to caring for her sick father and her sister, who returns to her life after years of estrangement. Bessie, portrayed by the brilliant Diane Keaton, has been battling her own struggles with illness and disillusionment. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she learns that she needs a bone marrow transplant and that her only hope of getting it is her sister Lee, whom she hasn’t seen in a long time.
Lee, played by Meryl Streep, is a woman living a rather wild life, filled with complications and questionable decisions. Through their interactions, the two sisters begin to confront old grudges and family secrets that have resurfaced. Their relationship intensifies further when Bessie introduces Lee to her children, particularly a troubled young man who is grappling with his own identity and the burden of his mother’s illness.
With an emotional backdrop that explores family bonds, forgiveness, and redemption, the film takes us on a journey where laughter and tears coexist. As they face the realities of life and death, Bessie and Lee will discover that true strength lies in their ability to connect and heal, despite the challenges life has thrown their way.
