In a post-war Milan marked by poverty and despair, an orphan named Totò lives in an orphanage where life is tough and gray. However, his fortune changes when a kind elderly woman adopts him and takes him to a humble neighborhood filled with peculiar characters who face harsh realities with their ingenuity and solidarity. When the elderly woman dies, Totò finds himself alone once more, but his neighbors do not abandon him.
