In a quiet New England town, a poet and editor named Will Randall leads a monotonous and routine life. However, everything changes when he is bitten by a wolf on a dark and stormy night while returning home. After this encounter, Will begins to experience a series of strange changes; his health improves, he becomes stronger, and, most unsettlingly, he develops a heightened sense of perception, both for detecting danger and for sensing sexual attraction.
As Will grapples with these transformations, he finds himself embroiled in a fierce struggle for his position at the publishing house where he works, threatened by his ambitious colleague, Stewart, who has plans to get rid of him. Furthermore, his relationship with his wife begins to crumble, and the attraction to a young and charismatic writer named Laura becomes undeniable. The combination of his newly discovered sharpness and the primal instincts surfacing within him tests his humanity.
As his metamorphosis progresses, Will faces an existential dilemma. He must decide whether to embrace his new wild nature, which grants him power and confidence, or try to reclaim his old life and humanity. Set against a backdrop of intrigue, romance, and horror, the story explores the conflict between civilization and the beast within us, as Will becomes a being caught between two worlds.
