In rural Florida at the end of the 19th century, a boy named Jody Baxter lives with his family on a simple farm. His life is tough, filled with work and responsibilities, but it is also full of dreams and a yearning for adventure. Everything changes when Jody finds a small orphaned fawn in the woods. Determined to raise the animal and give it a home, the young boy forms an unbreakable bond with the deer, which he names Flag.

As he grows, Jody and Flag's relationship deepens, symbolizing the innocence of childhood and the joys of life in nature. However, life in the countryside is not easy, and Jody must face the realities of life, the challenges of poor harvests, and the heartbreaking decisions that nature presents. The story takes a dramatic turn when the deer, now grown and increasingly wild, represents both freedom and danger.

Caught between the love he feels for his furry friend and the harsh reality surrounding his family life, Jody must make a decision that will change his life forever. The film captures the journey to maturity, sacrifice, and the connection between man and nature, leaving a lasting imprint on the hearts of those who see it. It is a moving portrait of loss and bonds, a reminder that growing up often involves making difficult choices.
