The Catered Affair

In a working-class neighborhood of New York, the life of a family is disrupted by the preparations for the wedding of their only daughter, Janice. The mother, a traditional and dreamy woman, becomes obsessed with making this event a grand occasion, a lavish banquet that leaves a mark, while the father, a bus transport worker, faces the harsh reality of their limited resources and his sense of familial duty.

As the plans progress, the tension in the home begins to rise. The mother idealizes every detail: the food, the decoration, and the guest list, while Janice, who is about to marry a well-mannered yet ambitious young man, tries to maintain peace and not hurt her mother's feelings. However, the true conflict arises when the mother reveals her own unfulfilled desires and dreams, and Janice must choose between family tradition and her own future.

The film poignantly and sometimes comically depicts family dynamics and how dreams can clash with reality. With a focus on women’s struggle to find their voice in a world dominated by social expectations, the story offers a heartfelt portrayal of family relationships, sacrifices, and the decisions that shape the path to adulthood. As the wedding date approaches, each character will be forced to reflect on their role within the family and what truly matters in life.
