Alex is a young Berliner whose life takes an unexpected turn when his mother, a fervent advocate of socialism and the East German regime, falls into a coma just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. During her prolonged convalescence, history erupts in a whirlwind of political and social changes of which she has no knowledge. When she finally awakens, Alex discovers that his mother is uninformed about the new world surrounding her. Determined to protect her from the shock of reality—something that could be too much for her fragile heart—Alex embarks on a risky and comedic mission to create an alternative world.
Convinced that socialism still exists, he and his brother unleash their creativity to modify reality. From changing television advertisements and paintings on the walls to orchestrating elaborate lies about everyday life, the brothers attempt to present a version of life in East Germany that is more tranquil and familiar. However, as the lies expand and complications mount, Alex confronts moral dilemmas about truth and family.
This funny and bittersweet comedy highlights the clash between the past and the present, memory and oblivion, while exploring the complexities of familial love in times of radical change. The film is a tribute to the struggle to preserve family bonds in a world that no longer exists.
