Set in the turbulent Italy of the 20th century, the story follows the lives of two childhood friends, Alberto and Olmo, who grow up on a farm by the banks of the Po River. As the world around them changes, the lives of the two men are shaped by their different social classes and values. Alberto, heir to a wealthy landowning family, represents opulence and tradition, while Olmo, from humble origins and deeply influenced by communism, symbolizes the struggle for social justice and equality.

Throughout the film, the viewer witnesses the transformation of the country, from World War I to the rise of fascism, reflected in the lives of these two friends who, despite their differences, share a deep emotional connection. Political tensions and family conflicts intensify, leading Alberto and Olmo to confront their beliefs and loyalties.

The narrative is enriched by an impressive cast, moments of profound reflection, and a stunning visual style that captures the essence of the era. As the story unfolds, themes of friendship, betrayal, love, and the eternal struggle between classes are explored, making this an epic that narrates not only the story of two men but also that of a country divided by war and ideology. In the end, the film invites the viewer to consider the price of loyalty and the sacrifices necessary to fight for a better future.
