A man with an intellectual disability lives a simple yet love-filled life in the heart of San Francisco. Sam Dawson, portrayed by Sean Penn, is a devoted single father who faces countless challenges after becoming the caretaker of his daughter Lucy, whom he raises with love and dedication. Since her birth, Sam has strived to give her the best, but as the little girl grows, so does her intelligence, raising serious questions about Sam's ability to be a functional father.

When child protective services determines that Sam is not fit to care for Lucy, he embarks on a legal battle that becomes an emotional journey that will change their lives forever. With the help of a troubled lawyer, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, Sam engages in a fight that not only challenges the system but also becomes a poignant reflection on unconditional love and family.

The film addresses the complexities of paternal love in a context that invites us to question what it means to be a "good father." As the story unfolds, Sam demonstrates that, despite his limitations, his deep connection with Lucy and his desire to be the best father possible are what truly matter. This moving drama makes us laugh, cry, and reflect on what it really means to be a family.
