The Kaiser's Lackey

In a small German town at the beginning of the 20th century, an ambitious young man named Diederich Hessling yearns to climb the social ladder and become a man of power. Since childhood, he has lived in fear of authority while simultaneously longing to fit into his oppressive world. When his father, a prosperous businessman, leaves him a legacy that includes a factory, Diederich feels compelled to follow the path of servility and flattery towards those in superior positions.

As time goes by and amidst the increasing militarization of Germany, Diederich becomes a fervent supporter of the new regime, convinced that personal success can only be attained through submission and betrayal of his principles. As he clings to his ambition, he does not hesitate to manipulate and harm those around him, including his friends and even his own family. However, his thirst for power leads him into an inevitable internal conflict: guilt, betrayal, and hypocrisy begin to consume his soul.

Set against a backdrop of social criticism, this story offers an incisive look at the dangers of conformity and the desperate quest for approval. Through Diederich's evolution, the narrative immerses us in a world where morality unfolds on the chessboard of power, revealing the profound consequences of a weak character in the face of the tyranny of obedience.
