In a quiet city in Rhode Island, police officer Charlie Baileygates strives to be a kind and helpful man, but his life takes an unexpected turn when his wife leaves him for another man. Following this heartbreak, Charlie begins to develop a multiple personality disorder. He alternates between his kind personality and his more aggressive and sarcastic alter ego, Hank, leading him into increasingly ridiculous and uncontrollable situations.
When Charlie becomes embroiled in a complicated case involving a woman named Irene, he takes on the role of her protector after she is accused of a crime she didn't commit. Together, they embark on a chaotic journey across the country, while Charlie tries to keep his new identity under control. Irene, played by Renée Zellweger, quickly finds herself drawn to Charlie's challenging side, but his unstable psyche and the constant struggle between his two personalities create a whirlwind of absurd situations.
The road is filled with chases, misunderstandings, and hilarious encounters, and as they both face the forces pursuing them, Charlie must decide if he can reconcile his two sides and find a way to love without losing his sanity. Increasing the comedy with touches of romance, the story explores the internal struggle between being oneself and the expectations one faces in love and life.
