Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor in New York, finds himself at a standstill in his career. Despite his skills, he has a reputation for being complicated, which leaves him out of auditions. When his friend suggests participating in a play looking for a leading actor, Michael comes up with a crazy idea: to disguise himself as a woman to land the role. Thus, Dorothy Michaels is born, a convincing woman who quickly captivates producers and audiences alike.

With his new alter ego, Michael dives into the world of women and soon becomes a star. However, the situation complicates when he falls in love with his co-star, Julie, who has no idea that her beloved "partner" is actually a man. As his life intertwines with the complicated relationships on set, Michael must confront the truth about his identity and the limits of his performance.

The comedy unfolds in a whirlwind of entanglements, misunderstandings, and hilarious moments as Michael struggles to keep his secret. Through a maze of disappointments and revelations, the film tackles themes of gender, love, and authenticity in a world that often focuses on appearances. With an impeccable cast and a clever script, the movie becomes a classic that explores the complexities of identity and acceptance.
