In a quiet coastal town in New England, life goes on as usual, until a Soviet submarine accidentally runs aground near the beach. Believing that its arrival is part of an invasion, the charming but eccentric townspeople enter into a collective hysteria, arming themselves to the teeth and preparing for the worst. In an attempt to prevent panic, a group of citizens, which includes a bourgeois by nature and a young idealist, embarks on a mission to intercept the "invaders."
Meanwhile, the Soviet crew, made up of a group of disorganized yet friendly sailors, decides to venture into the town to seek help and repair their submarine. As the paths of the Russians and the locals cross, the situation spirals into a series of misunderstandings and comedic situations, where fear transforms into friendship and stereotypes crumble.
The film explores themes of political paranoia and the human tendency to fear the unknown, but ultimately shows how laughter and understanding can bring together people from different cultures. Through hilarious misunderstandings and unexpected encounters, the characters realize that, despite their differences, they all seek the same things: acceptance, peace, and a place to call home. The experience turns out to be a charming comedy that challenges the tensions of the Cold War with a touch of wit and humanity.
